My Laptop Fleet
Over the years, I have owned numerous laptops and have settled on a small fleet of three machines:
- Windows Box: Windows 10 - HP i7-6700HQ (2016)
- Linux Box: Lubuntu - HP i3-4010u (2014)
- Spare: Lubuntu - Compaq C700 C2Duo-T5250 (circa 2007)
HP i3-4010u: An Awesome Processor
Intel did well with the release of this 4th generation processor. While the i3 is designed as an entry-level and basic CPU, it works perfectly for Linux and most of my computing needs, excluding gaming.
One of the best features is its low power consumption, which was a significant reason I decided to replace most of my older laptops that ran Core 2 Duos and older processors. I am still impressed at how many people continue to use their 4th gen i3 processors, which sell for a decent price on eBay (my HP i3 model goes for about $200).
HP i7-6700HQ: Great, but Needs a GPU and SSD
The i7 is an excellent processor, but if you plan to buy one, ensure it is paired with an SSD and a GPU. In hindsight, I had these options but opted for a lower-priced configuration. I regret this decision and am partially making up for it by upgrading to an SSD.
I foresee the i7 lasting me at least a decade, if not two. By then, it will be considered a dinosaur compared to whatever technology is available in 2036.
Gaming Laptop: Next Purchase?
I am leaning towards finally replacing the old Compaq Core 2 Duo with a gaming laptop. I am evaluating the HP Pavilion series, possibly opting for a mid-tier i5-9300H with a 256 GB SSD and GTX1050 GPU. I still need to do my homework and better understand my options. In technology, it's okay to wait, as better deals often emerge the longer you hold out. Honestly, the i7 is handling my online gaming needs quite well for now.
Closing Thoughts
So far, the HP i3 and i7 have served me well, with my Linux i3 being my primary machine. I have grown to appreciate the wider format of these laptops, with their large 15.4" touchscreens and full keyboard layouts.
The i3 is now six years old (2014) and the i7 is four years old (2016), and both are running strong. I plan to upgrade the i3 with an SSD, which should easily extend its lifespan by another six years. The C700, from 2009, is still using its original HDD, proving that longevity is feasible.
The only exception has been the batteries. The i3 lasts about 45-60 minutes on its original battery. I am evaluating options and seeking a stronger aftermarket battery that might be two to three times larger than the original, potentially providing a decent 5-6 hours of life again.
Update - 8/2/22
Even after two years, both the i3 and i7 are going strong and continue to be my Linux and Windows rigs, respectively. I am still lacking a good gaming laptop and am relying on the i7.
I am unsure why I am hesitating, but I will likely wait until late 2023, as I plan to buy the new iPhone 14 and an Apple Watch this year, which has already allocated my budget.
Update - 5/13/23: New Addition
I have added a third laptop to my collection, the Dell Precision 7530, which serves as my gaming machine. I spent $225 on an older 8th gen i5-8400H model. For now, I am running Linux Mint 21.2 and am quite happy with it. The new M.2 NVMe SSDs are impressive, and this machine is designed for modification. With the ability to maintain five M.2 NVMe SSDs, I plan to turn this into a dual-boot powerhouse.
