2015 Toyota Camry - Maintenance Log

I kinda liked logging my car maintenance and gas fill up’s when I owned the Lexus and will do the same with the Camry.

Jan 2022 - $900 - 90k Service

I like to do preventive maintenance so I paid $900 to do whatever was needed.

3/8/22 - 27.7 mpg

9.8 gallons on 271 miles.  Did a partial fill-up as prices are going up daily and have easily gone up a $1 in just a few days!

Had I filled up a few days earlier I would have saved $8 on 10 gallons of gas.

3/13/22 - 31.4 mpg

9.45 gallons on 297 miles.  Did a 260 mile road trip on the weekend.  Most of it was highway miles so was expecting better gas mileage.

3/23/22 - 26.8 mpg

8.2 gallons on 220 miles.  At this pace I’m using a full tank every 10-20 days or about 15 days.  At that pace I need to fill-up 24 times a year.

That’s 408 gallons of gas (17 gallons x 24).  At $5 a gallon that’s $2,040/year or $170/month on fuel cost.

To save some money, I’m gonna cut that down by 25% to 306 gallons or 18 tanks.  That’ll save me $510/yr.

It’s feasible as that is about 22 miles/day.  I drive half that for work and rest are all weekend miles or for errands.

3/29/22 - 26.4 mpg

10.1 gallons on 267 miles.  I did a lot of driving this past weekend due to the Omega x Swatch drop, all for nothing.

Gonna try and stretch it to 10 days before next fill-up.

4/3/22 - 28.2 mpg

4.86 gallons on 137 miles.  Did a quarter tank fill up as I also needed to wipe my windshield and get some air for the tires.

4/10/22 - 23.4 mpg

8.6 gallons on 202 miles.  Very poor gas mileage.  Will monitor what’s going on?

4/17/22 - 27.1 mpg

5.85 gallons on 158 miles.  I did more long distance highway driving this time around and this would indicate mileage is still poor as I should be getting above 30 mpg.

4/23/22 - Brakes, Tire, Bumper - $600

$600 for repairs and car is barely 3 months since I bought it in January.  So what’s the damage?

  • Rear Brakes - $280
  • Rear Bumper (rattling) - $280
  • Rear Tire (plug) - $40

$600 smacked in the face.  For used cars so long as the brakes measure at least 3mm they don’t need to replace them when sold used.  Sadly, I didn’t check and it was likely at 3mm and dropped to 2 mm in just 3 months…

  • Brake Fluid Flush
  • EFI Injector Cleaning

Also needed a brake fluid flush and EFI injector cleaning.  Normally those each are $250-$300, but they forgot to do those when I bought it in January and paid for the 90K mile service.  So good news me coming in 3 months helped catch those and get it remediated without charge.  But still, those should have been done already.

4/24/22 - 25.5 mpg

262 miles on 10.28 gallons.  Downright awful and a lot of that was highway miles so I’m thinking it’s partially due to the bad tire.  I can also evaluate how the EFI, brake fluid flushes and new rear brake pads factoring into the equation, but I’m thinking the better tire pressure and EFI cleaning will do the most to help improve gas mileage.

But it’s been all over the map past few months so hard to say really.

4/30/22 - 30 mpg

525 miles on 17.5 gallons.  I was expecting better gas mileage as I did mostly freeway miles going at a steady 75-80 mph most of the way.  I had 2 fill ups and combined the miles driven as I forgot to reset my counter during the first fill up.

5/7/22 - 23 mpg

208 miles on 8.97 gallons.  Pretty awful gas mileage.  Not sure what’s going on.

6/1/22 - 22 mpg

I missed logging a fillup prior to this one.  This fill up was bad with 262 miles on 11.9 gallons.  Probably the worst gas mileage on record thus far.

8/20/22 - TBD

It’s been a while and barely driving much.  Filled the tank with 10.6 gallons and didn’t have a good read on miles driven.

10/1/22 - 22 mpg

12.6 gallons on 278 miles.  Pretty poor gas mileage but then I drive barely 50 miles a week now so takes me a month to use up that much gas.

10/16/22 - 20 mpg

I barely drive now and did about 137 miles and figured it’s been 2 weeks and was at quarter tank so I added 6.6 gallons and added air to the tires too.

I do mostly do city roads so I was surprised it was so low and expected at least 22 mpg.

11/12/22 - 20.3 mpg

222 miles on 10.9 gallons.  Still quite poor gas mileage.

12/16/22 - 21.9 mpg

266 miles on 12.16 gallons.  I did a few long trips of 10 miles one way.  Otherwise same short 3-4 miles kills the mpg,

1/19/23 - Car Broke Down!  Oil Change & Drive Belt - $540

First time ever, had my car break down on me while driving in traffic.  The culprit was the drive belt and spark plugs.  In addition to an oil change, tire rotation and all that jazz repair bill was $540.  I guess not so bad?  But this is supposed to be a Toyota!

So after one year...this Toyota cost me $ 2,140 in maintenance!

2/22/23 - 25 mpg

Did 325 miles on 13 gallons so finally hit back but to 25 mpg.  I think I can get closer to 30 when avoiding rush hour traffic.

Was it a bad drive belt causing poor gas mileage before?

3/3/23 - 27 mpg

306 miles on 11.3 gallons.  I did a 100 mile drive so that can help explain the better gas mileage.  Camry’s should do 35 mpg on highways so this is still below expectations.

3/19/23- 24 mpg

253 miles on 10.45 gallons.  Even with the longer commute I’m doing about the same.  Half my miles are highway.  Quite marginal my gas mileage.

4/12/23 - 24 mpg

333 miles on 13.8 gallons.

4/27/23 - 25.6 mpg

328 miles on 12.8 gallons.  Almost the same distance as previous, but +1.6 better mpg.  Saving me 1 gallon of gas.

6/11/23 - 25.4 mpg

292 miles on 11.5 gallons.  Still crap mileage.  I drive mostly freeway miles.

6/25/23 - 27.2 mpg

280 miles on 10.3 gallons.  I did one long drive on Saturday for at least 60 miles, otherwise same mileage and filling up mostly at Costco.  Trying to figure out why gas mileage improved this time?

7/29/23 - Oil Change & Tire Rotation - 98.5k Miles - $130

Did the 5k oil change early at 98.5k (supposed to be 100k) and rotated tires.  Also due is the Transmission Flush and Engine Coolant and plan those on next visit at 100k miles, estimate those cost me about $600.

This car is approaching $3,000 in maintenance cost near 2nd year mark.  But considering I’ll be driving about 6k miles per year, once I’m done with these major service interval items should be limited to oil changes 2x per year.

Future maintenance:

  • 2022 - 88k - EFI Flush, Brake Fluid Flush, Rear Brakes, Oil x2
  • 2023 - 100k - Drive Belt, Tran Flush, Engine Coolant Flush, Oil x2
  • 2024 - 108k - Front Brakes, Oil x2
  • 2025 - 116k - Oil x2
  • 2026 - 124k - New Battery, Oil x2
  • 2027 - 132k - Oil x2
  • 2028 - 140k - Engine Coolant, New Tires, Oil x2
So it’ll average to $1k/year in maintenance over 6 years with $3k already spent in first 2 years.  Both ways it’s still cheaper than the Lexus IS250 that burned me $8k in 3 years or $2.7k a year…

8/11/23 - 24.8 mpg
421 miles on 17 gallons.  Even after an oil change, tire rotation and filled up air still stuck at 24 mpg.

8/27/23 - 24.2 mpg
308 miles on 12.75 gallons.  Still stuck at this mpg.

9/8/23 - 25.6 mpg
295 miles  on 11.5 gallons.  Got a bit better.

10/21/23 - ATF, Coolant Flush, Alignment - $700
Hit 100k miles so it was time to do some preventative maintenance with transmission flush, coolant flush and wheel alignment.  I’d prefer a drain and fill on the transmission, but that’s all they would do is a flush at the dealership.

I’ve now spent $2,970 in maintenance in 20 months of ownership so about $135 per month.  Front brakes need to be changed in a year so maybe at next oil change in January or following maybe in July 2024 oil change.  Tires are good so I should have minimal maintenance for 2024.

10/26/23 - 23.5 mpg
284 miles on 12.1 gallons.  What lousy mileage!  I got the car serviced and wheels balanced for worse gas mileage?  Not quite sure what’s up with this…

11/04/23 - 25 mpg
279 miles on 11.1 gallons.  Slight improvement.  At same time it might be due to 2 long drives I took averaging 40-50 miles.  Reason I had to fill up so soon 10 days after my previous…instead of 15 days.

11/18/23 - 26.3 mpg
298 miles on 11.3 gallons.  Finally!  Gas mileage improving and this was my regular driving, no long drives either!  Had 1/4 tank remaining so decided to fill up today.

12/9/23 - 25 mpg
328 miles on 13.077 gallons.  My usual driving mostly city roads so not sure what’s the difference.

12/22/23 - 25 mpg
306 miles on 12.275 gallons.  Same as previous fill up.

Sony MDR-ZX100 vs ZX-110 vs ZX310 Series Headphones

By happenstance I own several Sony ZX Series Headphones: ZX-100 ZX-110 ZX-310 Build Quality (ZX-310 Wins) They use mostly a Plastic Build that is quite durable; the ZX-100 I've had for over 2 1/2 years and been thrown about in my Backpack & Car.  The ONLY issue with the lower model ZX-100 & ZX-110 Series are the crappy Earpads that disintegrate and create a flaky vinyl mess.  Those flakes then get stuck to your ears & hair.  The ZX-310 wins in that regard with much better quality Earpads. Cost (ZX-100/110 Wins) ZX-310's cost about twice that of the ZX-100/110 and I've been able to find several 310's for about $18 at Discount Retailers.  ZX-110's should go for about $10. Specs They are all 30mm Drivers.  The ZX-310 has a wider Frequency Range of 10 ~ 24,000 Hz and a Gold 1/8" Plug.  The ZX-100/110 are roughly identical going 12 ~ 22,000 Hz. Sound (ZX-100 Wins) Surprisingly, I prefer the ZX-100's Sound Signature vs. the 110 and 31

Casio G-Shock 5600 vs 6900 vs 9000

Having now owned several G-Shocks I've come to appreciate certain features of various models.  For most part all I care about primarily is 'size'.  Features are secondary and so long as it has World Time, I'm happy. Size (5600 wins) In terms of size the 5600's are my favorite, but the convenience of the illumination button front and center on the 6900 is beautiful. The compromise?  It has to go to the 9000 series Mudman.  While the buttons are difficult to press it is the right size and button arrangement that just connects with me as one of my favorite G-Shocks thus far.  Now Module versions this is probably a bad selection to compare as I have a GLX, G and DW types.  But form factor wise they are roughly equivalent representatives of their model series.  There are certainly much larger G-Shocks, but for me the 6900 is where I will draw the line for now. Features (G9000 Wins, GLX5600 Good Second) Most G-Shocks have the standard basics down pat and all I car

Eton Microlink FR160 Radio -- Sticky Residue

I bought an Eton Microlink FR160 Handcrank Radio for my Emergency Kit a few years ago and it's great, except for one thing....over time a sticky residue coats the radio's external surface.  It was driving me nuts and I thought something was wrong. Fortunately, rather than dump it I researched online and learned Eton Radios are coated with a substance to make them easier to grip, but over time it degrades and becomes a sticky mess.  Some isopropyl alcohol and cotton balls can clean most of the gunk.  Some paint maybe lost in the process, but the radio at least is not sticky anymore.
