Choosing My Next Watch: Casio G-Shock DW-5600 vs. Casio A168
In 2021, I found myself considering a new watch to add to my collection after my last purchase, the Victorinox INOX, in 2020. With the unfortunate demise of my Apple Series 2, I had room for another timepiece. I was drawn to two classic options:
- Casio G-Shock DW-5600
- Casio A168
Evaluating the Contenders
Details Matter
While my collection of G-Shocks has always been solid, I’ve found some lacking in certain aspects. My GLX-5600 is a striking red, but my DW-6900 is too bulky, and the G9000 has a hard-to-read negative display. This led me to consider the black DW-5600 or the silver A168.
Pro #1: Both Are Affordable
One major advantage of these watches is their affordability. Although I’m leaning towards the DW-5600, I’m also tempted to acquire both. Their prices typically range between $20-$40, making them low-risk additions to my collection.
Pro #2: G-Shock's Indestructibility
I’ve always appreciated G-Shocks for their durability. They can withstand a lot—whether diving into a pool, ocean, or rugged outdoor work. The G-Shock is a true beater watch, and I love that aspect.
Con #1: Growing Watch Collection
A downside to acquiring both watches is my ever-growing collection. While my tastes have evolved, I wonder if I really need over a dozen watches. However, considering the price, I remind myself that they cost less than a full tank of gas or a week’s worth of groceries.
Currently, I have room for 20 watches and only own 11, so I can afford to add both without feeling guilty.
The Decision-Making Process
I enjoy debating and reflecting on each potential purchase, so there’s no rush. I’m taking my time to consider which watch aligns better with my needs.
Update - A168 at Walmart
When I visited Walmart, I saw the A168 on display. While it’s an okay watch, my inclination towards the DW-5600 grew stronger. The A168 isn’t ideal for my lifestyle, as I often take my watches swimming, and it lacks sufficient water resistance. However, I do admire the chrome and metal look of the A168, which sparked an idea to mod my red GLX-5600 into a metal G-Shock for a unique combination.
Update - 7/4/21 - Short Supply
Finding Casio G-Shocks, especially the entry-level DW series, became a challenge. Prices on Amazon crept close to MSRP, with my old DW-6900, once snagged for under $40, now priced around $80.
Update - 7/5/21 - DW5600 Incoming
After weighing my options, I decided on the DW-5600. I found it for about $48 after using a coupon, and the decision felt solid.
Update - 8/28/21 - A168WA Acquired
In a surprising turn, I also picked up the Casio A168WA for its incredibly low price. Now, I have both watches!
Conclusion
In the end, the reasonable prices of both watches convinced me to try owning them both and see firsthand which one I prefer. After using them for a few weeks, I’ve enjoyed both watches and started culling my collection to make room for these two Casios. Ultimately, it's about the experience, and I’m glad I expanded my collection with these iconic pieces.
