2019 Travels -- Las Vegas -- Venetian

Vegas Work Trip Review

I spent a week in Las Vegas for work and stayed at the Venetian on the Strip. I’ve always wanted to check out this hotel, and while it was enjoyable, it didn’t quite live up to my expectations. Overall, my experiences with other casinos like Bellagio, Mirage, Paris, and Caesars felt similar. Thankfully, there's something for everyone at nearly every price point, which was a plus.

Highlights from the Trip

  • Beer Prices: I finally found decent beers for $2-5 without having to resort to CVS or Walgreens.
  • Craps: I learned how to play Craps! Although I lost money, it was fun to try.
  • Hotel Room: The Venetian hotel room featured double single beds with a very nice and spacious layout. 🤗

Drinks and Dining Experiences

  • Old Fashioned at the Casino Bar:

    • Rating: Meh 😑
    • I always seek the best Old Fashioned wherever I go. Using a 2-for-1 coupon at the Venetian, I tried the round casino bar, but it was underwhelming. Strong drinks, but not amazing for $18.75. I later learned that spending $20 on video poker might get me a complimentary drink next time.
  • Illy's - Cappuccino:

    • Rating: Meh 😑
    • I love a good cappuccino, but Illy’s didn’t impress me. Luckily, I found some excellent free cappuccinos at an expo in the Sands!
  • Sugarcane Bar & Grill at the Venetian:

    • Rating: Good! 😁
    • Dinner here with coworkers was a highlight. The Old Fashioneds were better than the casino bar, although not quite as good as what I had at Bellagio on a previous trip. The food, especially the vegetables, was top-notch.
  • In-N-Out:

    • Rating: Excellent! 😁
    • I always have to hit up In-N-Out for my Double Double Animal Style—never disappointed and very affordable.
  • O'Shea's:

    • Struggled to find a Black-n-Tan; after three bars, I finally found one made with Coors Lite and Guinness.
  • Delmonico Steakhouse at the Venetian:

    • Rating: Wow! 😍
    • We dined here another night, and it surpassed Ruth Chris and Morton’s. I’ve been to several Ruth Chris locations, and Delmonico’s was the best. They also served the best Old Fashioned I had in Vegas!
  • Bouchon Macarons:

    • Rating: Adequate 🤔
    • I prefer Ladurée for macarons, but I tried Bouchon’s again. While good, I’ll seek out another place next time.

Flight Experience

  • Hawaiian Airlines:

    • Rating: Gross Sandwich 😝
    • They should reconsider advertising complimentary meals; the sandwich was unappetizing. The chicken & rice was okay, but the sandwiches were a letdown. Their drink choices were also lacking.
  • Starbucks - Cold Brew and Amazon Fire HD8 Tablet:

    • Rating: Good! 😀
    • This was my first trip using my new Amazon Fire HD8 tablet, and I loved it! Although I didn’t use it on the plane due to Hawaiian Airlines' good movie selection, I streamed movies and shows in my hotel room. The Fire HD8 is perfect for that purpose, and I’m thrilled I got it for $50. My Apple AirPods synced nicely with it too.

Overall Impression

  • Great Trip! 😋
    • Overall, this was a fantastic trip. I’m starting to enjoy Vegas more, especially with a good group of people. I’m heading back for another business trip next month and look forward to seeing how it goes!

Update (4/14/2020)

I’m grateful I visited Vegas in 2019, especially since things will be different for a while, if not forever. I got to enjoy the city pre-COVID-19. Excited to see what the future holds in a post-COVID-19 world!

Sony MDR-ZX100 vs ZX-110 vs ZX310 Series Headphones

Sony ZX Series Headphones Review: A Budget-Friendly Sound Choice If you’re on the hunt for budget-friendly headphones with decent quality, the Sony ZX Series is definitely worth considering. I happen to own several models from the lineup: ZX-100 ZX-110 ZX-310 Let’s dive into how they compare in terms of build quality, cost, specs, sound, and overall value. Build Quality: ZX-310 Takes the Lead The Sony ZX series headphones primarily feature a durable plastic construction. My ZX-100 has lasted over 2½ years, enduring countless tosses into my backpack and car without any issues. However, the lower-end ZX-100 and ZX-110 models have a significant downside: poor-quality earpads. Over time, these earpads disintegrate, leaving vinyl flakes that stick to your hair and ears. The ZX-310, on the other hand, comes with upgraded earpads that don’t suffer from this problem, making them a clear winner in the build department. Cost Comparison: ZX-100/110 Wins for Affordability While the ZX-310 model co

Casio G-Shock 5600 vs 6900 vs 9000

G-Shock Preferences and Favorites After trying out several G-Shock models, I've developed a better sense of the specific features and design elements I appreciate most. While features are always a plus, my main priority is size . Here's how some of the models I've tried stack up. Size Preference: DW-5600 Series For overall size, the DW-5600 series stands out as a favorite due to its compact, comfortable form. It’s slim, lightweight, and fits well on my wrist without being too bulky. Although the 6900 series provides the benefit of a well-placed front illumination button, the 5600 remains the ideal size for everyday wear. Best Compromise: G9000 Mudman Series If I had to choose a balanced option between size, comfort, and functionality, the G9000 Mudman series would be it. The buttons are slightly tough to press, but the layout and form factor resonate with what I prefer in a G-Shock. Despite having different module versions (GLX, G, and DW), I find that these models offe

Eton Microlink FR160 Radio -- Sticky Residue

Eton Microlink FR160 Handcrank Radio Review I bought an Eton Microlink FR160 handcrank radio for my emergency kit a few years ago, and it’s been great overall. However, there’s one significant issue I've encountered. Sticky Residue Problem Over time, a sticky residue developed on the radio's external surface, which was driving me nuts. At first, I thought there was something wrong with the device. Solution Fortunately, I researched the problem online and discovered that Eton radios are coated with a substance designed to make them easier to grip. Unfortunately, this coating degrades over time and turns into a sticky mess. To resolve the issue, I used isopropyl alcohol and cotton balls to clean most of the gunk. While some paint may have been lost in the process, at least the radio is no longer sticky.
